On May 29 th 2007 at 8 pm , the first briefing by the Chief Scientist Prof. Joern Thiede took place in the Meeting Room on Deck C. There were ca. 40 scientists and participants from various institutions and countries ( Germany , Belgium , UK , Norway , Spain , etc) during the first week - and four more scientists joined us via helicopter on the 6 th of June.

We were briefed on a few of the main destinations e.g. the Sula Reef (ca. 64 deg N, 7 deg 50' E) and <100 km off Tromsoe (ca. 69 deg 5' N, 13 deg 30' E).

There was a round of brief introductions where the scientists introduced themselves and their main objectives during this expedition (further details are available in the Expedition booklet). The participants can be categorized into several major groups such as the AWI group, Hydrosweep group, Parasound testing groups, Schwamm-Schleim-Schlamm (Sponge-Slime-Mud) group, the Invertebrates group, the HERMES + coral CORAMM group, the EU-HERMES WP10 Outreach School Team, the JAGO submersible team, the Weather Service team, the helicopter group, etc. Expedition b ooklets containing further information e.g. the expedition objectives and work description of each group, and booklets on the Polarstern were made available to the participants.
